P — Liar, deluded, or telling the truth

In short
- 1.**A liar?** He was called Al-Amin, the trustworthy, by the very people who later opposed him — and liars lie for money, power or status, all of which he refused.
- 2.**Deluded?** A deluded man does not produce a text that has withstood fourteen centuries of scrutiny and reshaped law, language and civilisation.
- 3.**Before the claim** he avoided the corruption around him, cared for orphans and the elderly, and was trusted with people's property.
- 4.**So he was telling the truth,** and he is the Messenger of God.
The claim being examined
If the Qur'an came through Muhammad ﷺ, his character is directly relevant. There are only three possible explanations for a man who claims prophethood.
The Islamic position
He was known as trustworthy before the claim, gained nothing from it, and a deluded man could not have produced the Qur'an. The remaining option is that he was telling the truth.
Analysis
This is a trilemma argument and, like every trilemma, its force depends on the options being genuinely exhaustive and the character evidence being sound. The strongest historical element is the pre-prophetic reputation, reported even by hostile parties, together with the fact that Quraysh offered wealth and leadership in exchange for stopping and were refused. Present it as cumulative reasoning about a person, not as a logical proof, and be ready to grant that a listener may propose a fourth option — sincere but mistaken — which is where the Qur'an itself becomes the evidence.
From the Qur'an
Qur'an 53:3–4
وَمَا يَنطِقُ عَنِ الْهَوَىٰ إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحْيٌ يُوحَىٰ
Nor does he speak from his own inclination. It is not but a revelation revealed.
Qur'an 68:4
وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ
And indeed, you are of a great moral character.

Sahih al-Bukhari 4770 · Sahih
When the Prophet ﷺ called Quraysh to the hill of Safa and asked whether they would believe him if he said an army was about to attack, they answered: we have never known you to tell a lie.
