The Islamic position

The Qur'an is not a history textbook. It corrects what bears on creed, prophethood and justice, and stays silent on much else — deliberately.

Analysis

The Qur'an narrates for guidance, not for record-keeping: "We relate to you the best of narrations" (Q 12:3), and "in their stories there is a lesson for people of understanding" (Q 12:111). It rarely gives a date, often withholds a name — the son to be sacrificed, the companion of Musa, the identity of Dhul-Qarnayn — and never supplies a genealogy in the biblical manner. That restraint is itself part of the argument in this section, because the differences from the biblical account are not random: they cluster precisely where God's oneness, a prophet's integrity, or basic justice is at stake. Three disciplines follow for anyone using these cards. First, distinguish a coherence claim ("this account holds together better") from a proof claim ("archaeology has demonstrated this"); most of the material here is the first kind, and it is strong enough. Second, where Muslim scholars themselves differ — the dating of Yusuf's king, the identity of Haman, the mummy identification — present the range rather than the loudest version. Third, do not fill the Qur'an's silences with israiliyyat and then defend them as Islam.
