The Qur'an as the Criterion · God's Oneness Guarded
Chosen by blood or chosen by conduct
Handle with care. Handle with care: this card must never be used against Jewish people. Keep it strictly about how a covenant is inherited.
In short
- 1.The Qur'an: My covenant does not include the wrongdoers (Q 2:124).
- 2.The most honoured of you before God is the most God-conscious (Q 49:13).
- 3.The Prophet ﷺ: no superiority of an Arab over a non-Arab except by taqwa.
The claim being examined
Parts of the earlier scripture present election as inherited: a people chosen through descent from Abraham.
The Islamic position
The Qur'an makes the covenant conditional — God tells Abraham plainly that His covenant does not include the wrongdoers.
Analysis
When Abraham asks whether the covenant of leadership will pass to his offspring, the Qur'an gives the answer in four words: "My covenant does not include the wrongdoers" (Q 2:124). That single clause reframes election from an inherited status into a conditional trust. Q 49:13 generalises it: humanity is made into peoples and tribes so that they may know one another, and "the most noble of you in the sight of God is the most righteous of you." The Prophet, peace be upon him, said in the Farewell Sermon that there is no superiority of an Arab over a non-Arab, nor of a white person over a black person, except by God-consciousness (Musnad Ahmad 23489, graded sahih by scholars of hadith including al-Albani), and he warned his own family: "O Fatimah, daughter of Muhammad, ask me for what you wish of my wealth — I cannot avail you against God at all" (Sahih al-Bukhari 2753, sahih). Present this fairly. Judaism itself frames chosenness as responsibility rather than privilege, and Christianity teaches election through faith rather than descent, so the target here is not Jewish people or Jewish belief. The Furqan point is narrower: where a text can be read as making salvation hereditary, the Qur'an closes the door on it explicitly, including for the family of its own Prophet.

From the Qur'an
قَالَ لَا يَنَالُ عَهْدِي الظَّالِمِينَ
He said: My covenant does not include the wrongdoers.
إِنَّ أَكْرَمَكُمْ عِندَ اللَّهِ أَتْقَاكُمْ
Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of God is the most righteous of you.

And do not presume to say to yourselves, We have Abraham as our father, for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham.

O Fatimah, daughter of Muhammad, ask me for what you wish of my wealth — I cannot avail you against God at all.
There is no superiority of an Arab over a non-Arab, nor of a non-Arab over an Arab, nor of a white person over a black person, except by God-consciousness.
