Aaron and the golden calf

The claim being examined
Exodus 32 has Aaron himself collect the gold, cast the calf, and build an altar for it.
The Islamic position
The Qur'an names the Samiri as the one who made the calf, and shows Harun, peace be upon him, warning the people and being overpowered.
Analysis
In Exodus 32 the high priest and brother of Moses is the direct agent of the idolatry: he collects the earrings, casts the image, builds an altar before it and announces a feast to the LORD in front of it. Later, questioned, he offers the implausible line that he threw the gold into the fire "and out came this calf" (Ex 32:24). The Qur'anic account in Q 20:83-98 assigns the act to a named third party, al-Samiri, and gives Harun the role the biblical text takes away from him: "Aaron had already said to them before, O my people, you are only being tested by it, and indeed your Lord is the Most Merciful, so follow me and obey my order. They said: we will never cease being devoted to it until Moses returns to us" (Q 20:90-91). When Musa seizes his brother in anger, Harun explains that he feared Musa would say he had caused division among the Children of Israel (Q 20:94). Two consequences follow. First, prophetic integrity is preserved at the exact point where the biblical narrative surrenders it. Second, the Qur'an keeps a real culprit in the story, so the sin is not diffused into an accident of metallurgy.

وَلَقَدْ قَالَ لَهُمْ هَارُونُ مِن قَبْلُ يَا قَوْمِ إِنَّمَا فُتِنتُم بِهِ وَإِنَّ رَبَّكُمُ الرَّحْمَٰنُ فَاتَّبِعُونِي وَأَطِيعُوا أَمْرِي
And Aaron had already said to them before: O my people, you are only being tested by it, and indeed your Lord is the Most Merciful, so follow me and obey my order.
فَأَخْرَجَ لَهُمْ عِجْلًا جَسَدًا لَّهُ خُوَارٌ
Then he produced for them a calf, a body which made a lowing sound.
