Who Carried the Cross? (Mark 15 vs. John 19)

- 1.Mark 15:21 (and Matthew and Luke): Simon of Cyrene was forced to carry the cross for Jesus (PBUH).
- 2.John 19:17 says Jesus (PBUH) carried his own cross the whole way.

The claim being examined
The view that the passion narratives are consistent eyewitness reporting of the same sequence of events.
The Islamic position
The have Simon of Cyrene carrying the cross; John insists Jesus (PBUH) carried his own.
Analysis
John tells the walk to the cross differently from the three earlier Gospels, and it fits his picture of Jesus (PBUH) throughout: always in control, never needing help. Leaving Simon out is part of that presentation. John reshapes other details of the final day too, including which day of Passover it was.

wamā qatalūhu wamā ṣalabūhu walākin shubbiha lahum
They did not kill him, nor did they crucify him, but it was made to appear so to them.
