The Paraclete Sayings (John 14-16)

The claim being examined

The view that the Paraclete promised in the Farewell Discourse refers exclusively to the Holy Spirit as a non-corporeal divine person.

The Islamic position

Muslims note that the Paraclete is described in strikingly personal terms — he hears, speaks, is sent, and does not speak on his own authority — which parallels the Qur'anic description of a messenger conveying revelation.

Analysis

In Koine Greek, "parakletos" (παράκλητος) denotes one called alongside to advocate or console. John 16:13 describes him as one who "will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come" — a description of transmitted speech and prediction. John 16:7 makes his arrival conditional on Jesus's departure, which sits awkwardly beside earlier narratives in which the Spirit is already present and active. Muslim scholars from Ibn Ishaq onwards also discussed the near-homophone "periklytos" (περικλυτός, "praised one"), corresponding to the meaning of Ahmad in Surah 61:6, though no surviving Greek manuscript carries that reading — an honest presentation should say so plainly and rest the case on the functional description instead. Christian exegesis reads the passages pneumatologically; the point of the comparison is that the text's own vocabulary is personal and agentive.
