1 Corinthians 14:34-35: The Silence of Women

Handle with care. The interpolation theory is a serious scholarly position but not a consensus. Present it as debated, and never claim the verses are absent from all manuscripts — they are present in all of them, just not always in the same place.

The claim being examined

Two verses commanding women to be silent in church move around in the manuscript tradition, and many scholars regard them as a marginal note absorbed into Paul's letter.

The Islamic position

Islam is frequently challenged on the status of women. This card is defensive as much as comparative: it shows that a famously restrictive Christian text is itself textually unstable.

Analysis

Displacement is a recognised signal of interpolation: a marginal comment written beside the text can be copied into different places by later scribes. Three chapters earlier Paul gives instructions for how a woman should be dressed while praying and prophesying in the assembly, which presupposes she speaks. Codex Fuldensis and Codex Vaticanus both carry scribal markings at this point that have been read as flags of a known textual problem. Scholars remain divided, and honest use of this card means saying so.
